Overcoming Sabotaging Behaviors & Thoughts

“You Are Not A Victim Of Your Biology” – Dr. Caroline Leaf

Dr. Caroline Leaf writes in her best-selling book Switch On Your Brain: The Key to Peak Happiness, Thinking and Health: “What we think about truly affects us both physically and emotionally. Today our culture is undergoing an epidemic of toxic thoughts that, left unchecked, create ideal conditions for illnesses.”

What a powerful revelation! Of course, the majority of us have heard somewhere in our lives that we need to think positive thoughts and feed our brains healthy information. However, many of us fail to actually do this on a daily basis. Life brings many challenges and experiences which can either foster wholeness or drag us down to the pit of despair. For this reason, we must be intentional about what we read, read and speak daily.

Life brings many challenges and experiences which can either foster wholeness or drag us down to the pit of despair. For this reason, we must be intentional about what we read, read and speak daily.

Be intentional about your thought life.  Every thought we have must be evaluated to see whether they truly serve us well and whether they can carry us further.  To truly overcome sabotaging behaviors and thoughts we must keep our minds active and healthy.  Philippians 4:8 reads, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is fair, whatever is pure, whatever is acceptable, whatever is commendable, if there is anything of excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy—keep thinking about these things.”  Another version states to “dwell” on these things.   This scripture admonishes to perpetually think about those things which are beneficial for us, not those things which are in direct opposition to our purpose and destiny. Sabotaging thoughts and behaviors are enemies of who the Most High wants us to be.

Here are some tips on how you can master negative thoughts:

  1. Pray daily, casting down all oppositional cognitions
  2. Exercise
  3. Eat healthy and drink lots of high-quality water
  4. Read positive and engaging books, articles – educational and inspirational
  5. Work on your purpose
  6. Plan your day – use a planner, calendar
  7. Implement
  8. Allow your painful memories or cognitions to become a catalyst for redirection
  9. Find a coping skill that works and use it regularly
  10. Use positive thought replacement and affirmations (Excellent coping mechanism)
  11. Be patient with yourself
  12. Speak life to your situations
  13. Don’t give up
  14. Find an accountability partner and connect with people who will challenge you to be better
  15. Repeat these daily

If implemented and practiced regularly, these tips should help you regain focus and redirect any negative thoughts or behaviors you may be exhibiting.

Rising Above Adversity

Often times we feel as if we cannot make it or that the walls of life are caving in on us. We revert back to our past experiences and sink to even lower places than we had been in before because we feel overwhelmed.  We know within ourselves that we are victorious, yet we allow the thoughts of the past to torment us and keep us hindered from truly experiencing the abundance we deserve.  Adversity challenges us in many ways; however, our mindset determines the outcome of the adversities we face. Simply by challenging our thought processes we can replace the negative results with positive ones and truly live in victory.

What adversities are you facing today?  What will it take for you to overcome them? What is needed in your life right now that will help you triumph over the despair and past pains which have typically left you handicapped with fear?  Do you realize that you are fearfully and wonderfully made, that nothing can keep you from experiencing abundance except your own thoughts and actions.  You, yes you are an heir of Abba Father through Christ (Galatians 4:7) You know longer have to live in shame or guilt, despair or discouragement. Adversity, whether derived from your past or instigated by your present circumstances can propel you to greatness and you do not have to be swallowed up by any feelings or insecurity or inadequacy.

Dr. Cindy Trimm states in her book The Rules of Engagement for Overcoming Your Past, “Overcoming is an ongoing process that requires personal integrity, not just for some of us but for all of us.”  Regardless of what you have done or been the recipient of, you are victorious and you are an overcomer.  Challenge your thoughts today and replace doubt, fear and negative cognition with those of peace and abundance.

Identify Your Purpose, Work Your Purpose

Sharing From Our Thankful Thursday Facebook Live.

Today on our Facebook Live video we shared some important tips on identifying your purpose.  We want to take this moment to share these tips with you as well. Many people have difficulty determining what they are supposed to be doing with their lives and face challenges on choosing the right careers or developing their business ideas because they are stuck or hindered by their own fears or doubts. Be encouraged! You can accomplish whatever you decide to do but first you must discover where you are what you should really focus your energy and time into.

Ask yourself the following questions and ponder the following information:

  • Is what you are doing right now working for you?  If not then you need to change directions as soon as possible – the sooner you make positive changes the sooner you will see the results you desire.
  • Is what you are doing making you miserable?  If so why are you still doing it?

Many people are self-sabotaging because they cannot get past what someone did to them or they are still dwelling on historical hurts and trauma.  Here’s a key point – you may never get over what happened to you but you cheat yourself and others when you stay hindered by your own pain because someone needs the gifts you offer. Getting through the pain will help you get to a place of functional healing.

Finding Your Purpose & Working Your Purpose:

1. Find your niche – Just because you are good at something, it does not mean you are supposed to do it or that it is your niche.

2. Ask yourself if what you want to do is something you would do for free? Most likely your purpose is rooted in that thing you enjoy doing so much that you would do it even if you were not getting paid. But make no mistake you deserve to paid for your gifts and assignments.

3. It must cost you more than money – your purpose requires your energy, time, expertise and financial investment.  It may even cost you your luxuries.

4. Ask yourself how bad do you want it? Obedience is better than sacrifice.

5. Success usually doesn’t happen overnight but it can. Nevertheless, don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t. Keep pushing. If you reach at least one person and touch their lives, if you cause them to change for better then it’s worth it and that is a measure of success.

6.  Take a pause or take 50 steps back before making an extremely low emotion or extremely high emotion decision.  Feelings change.

7. Implement.

Your purpose doesn’t negate your past but it focuses on your future. So set your mentality and eyes on where you are going. Press the play button for your faith and activate it for success.  Your divine purpose is our passion.

New Year Blues

Greetings Beloved!!!!

For many the New Year has brought numerous blessings; however, for many others it has brought on a new set of challenges or obstacles from the previous year.  So how does one handle these challenges and obstacles? How does one overcome what I refer to as the New Year Blues? I believe the best way to handle them or overcome them is by implementing the following tips or strategies:

  • Surround yourself with positive, action-oriented individuals
  • Join support groups (especially if the challenge you face is an addiction or health issue)
  • Find a hobby or organization in which to volunteer time and talents
  • READ positive material
  • Implement new ideas and new ways of thinking about your circumstance
  • Activate your FAITH
  • If active on social media, join groups which will allow you to grow and learn new skills
  • Take a class which will challenge you to think differently
  • Speak positively about yourself and others
  • Dance Dance Dance (dancing is great exercise and fosters a good mental attitude)
  • Live Live Live (Focus on doing things which bring peace and enjoyment)
  • Laugh Laugh Laugh (Laughing makes you happy and causes you to feel better)
  • Love Love Love (Showing love to others makes you feel better about yourself)
  • Start a new business or tap into your gifts and abilities to create an additional income stream

These are just some things you can do to help overcome the New Year Blues.  These are also a few things that work for me when I get down but what also helps is listening to positive or inspirational music and motivational messages, reading scripture, spending time with close friends or family, doing simple tasks for other people, and spending time alone to refresh.

You have a purpose and that purpose is needed by others. Build your life by helping to build someone else’s. Overcome the blues by doing something that will make an impact within your community or the world. Don’t allow the difficult moments to defeat you but rather use the pain to drive you into your purpose. Until next time, pursue your passion with exuberant faith.

Many blessings,

Angel B.

Are You a Conduit or a Reservoir?

Years ago, one of my pastors taught a very powerful lesson on being a conduit or a reservoir.  This teaching has been a significant part of my faith walk for the last decade.  My eyes were opened to the true meaning of being used as a servant by God, for His express glory.  For the purpose of this teaching allow me to provide the definitions of these terms.  A conduit is defined as being a channel for conveying water or other fluid.  In other words, it is a conductor or vessel in which water flows through.  A reservoir is defined as being a place where fluid collects, especially in rock strata or in the body.  Now just reviewing the definitions of these terms makes me want to praise and worship Abba Father because if something is ‘fluid’ that means that it continuously flows or supplies to something or someone else.  I do not know about you but I would much rather be a conduit, allowing the Holy Spirit to operate through me to be a blessing to others as well as allowing my resources, gifts, talents and abilities to be used to build God’s Kingdom.  If we do not freely give of our gifts, talents and abilities then we become stagnant or unfruitful. It is the Father’s will that we use what He gave us to be a blessing to others thus creating more resources for ourselves.  He considers those who do not freely give to be wicked servants as described in the book of Matthew (parable of talents, Matthew 25).

My daily prayer is “Father, please help me to be a vessel and a conduit. Flow through me Holy Spirit so that I can impact and bless the lives of others for Your Glory.”  Are you a conduit or a reservoir?  Does His spirit flow through you or do you just keep everything He gives you to yourself?

As 2015 approaches, let us be vessels and servants to help others, to build and edify the Kingdom by building and edifying people.  May we show unconditional love based on the Word of God and not our imposed or superficial ideals.  May we truly embrace His love for us and freely give that love to others by demonstrating our gifts, talents and abilities to help individuals realize their God given purpose and potential.  Together we can do it.

Angel B.

Each day we have an opportunity to share with others; show kindness and gratitude to those who are or have been a blessing to us.  This week I have been so blessed to connect with awesome women and men from around the world and also in my local community.  It is a breath of fresh air to meet like minded individuals who are in agreement with your goals, dreams and visions but who also are grateful for the opportunity to share with and encourage one another.  As this year comes to a close, I daily seek opportunities to share with people about the blessings I have been afforded, the love of God and expressing gratitude to those who have been a gift in my life.

It is amazing to meet so many wonderful people who do phenomenal things for the Kingdom, believers, the marketplace and the world.  I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with so many who love God, love people and love serving.  I challenge you to reach out and show gratitude for the blessings God has provided. He is worthy of all praise and honor.
